How do architects secure design documents?

Securing digital documents and designs are always a challenge. Designs are the signatures of an architecture firm, a design can solely be the mark of an architecture firm. So with this much importance how do architecture firms ensure design document security.

With design software programs enabling architectural design creation and editing easy, firms are turning to digitize their organization. Even with the advancements of technologies I believe there are some gaps which have not been in sync with the actual practices. One major concern regarding the architectural firms is how to secure the digital designs and documents.

Large architecture firms have the capacity and resources to implement and maintain secure networks and software applications that can help them in securing their digital assets. But what about firms that do not use specific software applications? For example there are many small and medium architecture firms that improvise on freely available software programs for their organizations. But there is an extent to which improvisation can be done.

Some architects claims no recipe to their firm’s digital engagements but most often they themselves are not aware on the software aspects. For a startup it is all about gaining reorganization in the market, while the internal concern would be to set up the right work culture and work flow. In such cases knowledge of the different practices would be very helpful.
